I'd love to read Ms. Mantel's novel. I've been a Tudor fan for years and my favorite historical figures are Elizabeth I - for her courage, wisdom and faith that she transmitted to her subjects during the most perils of times (specially against the Spanish Armada); and I do admire Henry VIII for many weird reasons but specially for braking away from Rome and so seperating Church from State.

I read anything I can get my hands on involving the Tudors, but i think my all-time favorite is Margaret George's Henry VIII. Her one about Mary, Queen of Scots is a very close second.

I've had this one on my wish list for a while. I've read a few books about Henry VIII - the first a biography. My favorite Tudor novel so far is Anne of Cleves by Margaret Campbell Barnes (call me crazy, but I love that she got out with her head still attached to her body).

Yes I've been under a stone...but I'm tryin to get out from under it...lol My love to more about the tudors started with "The Other Boleyn" and it may be what some die-hards call "soft" in the historical aspects but it lured me in and I've been hooked every since. I'd love to read a book from Henry's perspective cause I think is was such a cad and it would take a lot to covince me otherwise. Lately he is up there with all the Mad Men pigs...I know it's very popular but it makes my blood boil when I watch it...my DH likes the nostalgia of it! He could have worse vices when it comes to TV so I just read while he watches and try not to let it get under my skin...lol Have a great day Marie and thanks for the fun giveaway. Fondly, Roberta

Excellent Marie! You really outdid yourself with this detailed post. I liked it so much I think it should be included in expert research material on this subject- you have done an extensive job in attempting to analyze this character. Like you, I too am always on the lookout for more material on Mary...and sadly am always left disappointed. It's too bad that this one (like usual) did so much to villify Anne in the process- yet was not able to give you more of the substantial stuff you were looking for on Mary herself. We'll have to keep looking for that special history book that gets it right!

Great review, Marie! I'm always curious about the truth regarding Mary. It's hard to reconcile the girl portrayed in the Tudors (tv show) to the Mary that was portrayed in my recent read, Virgin and the Crab (can you believe I still haven't reviewed it? I'm going to write it tomorrow). In that book, Mary is an angry woman, obsessed with her piety and religion, and so easily manipulated by men. Don't get me wrong. I don't necessarily have a problem with her being portrayed in that way. I find it somewhat believable that the years of being set aside by your father and constantly declared a bastard would have a negative effect on a person, not to mention the treatment of her mother. I know we will never know exactly what she was like, but it would be nice to read something that is evenly balanced regarding her character. Somehow I always picture her as she was portrayed in the Elizabeth film, which starred Cate Blanchett (one of my favorite films). This portrayal was how I thought of her as I was reading Virgin and the Crab as well.
